New Sesquicentennial Souvenirs Available From ISI

Imaging Specialists has just completed our latest project for Alleghany County’s Sesquicentennial. Working with NAPCO, here in Sparta, and local artists, we’ve generated several gift items for fundraising. In the project, there are 4 adult and one child’s jigsaw puzzles, a photo album and a case for the 4-CD set Ernest Joines has made to commemorate Alleghany musicians. The puzzle boxes are being assembled by ADAP, here in Sparta. The adult puzzles are all 12″ x 18″. The Children’s puzzle is 12″ x 16″.

Here are some of the items we’ve been working on:

June Furlow Quilt Puzzle

For this puzzle we scanned an attractive decorative quilt made by local artist June K-ton Furlow.

The original was approximately 22″ square. We scanned it in 4 parts at 600 dpi and reassembled the image in Photoshop. We then cropped the interior “image” section and reconfigured the “frame” section to fit a 2/3 ratio (12×18 final trim) and “built” a bleed onto the outer binding strip.

We built the final CMYK file in Illustrator adding the type layer and the Sesquicentennial Seal.

Avin Joines County Sketch – Children’s Puzzle

For this puzzle, we started with an original drawn by (then) high-school student, Avin Joines. We remade Avin’s drawing in Illustrator, added vector art to the perimeter to finish it. It is a 12-piece, frame-tray style puzzle for kids.

Alleghany Historical Map Puzzle

For this puzzle, we used a map from our the Historical Society book, “History of Alleghany County” as our base. We laid the map over an existing scan of old paper and then added old county area names and transparent colors all over. We added (4) plants that are important to Alleghany – spruce, tobacco, mountain laurel, and dogwood blossoms. This map puzzle has turned out to be one of our best selling items.

Alleghany County Musicians Past & Present – CD Folder

For the CD case, we used a series of images shot on a 2 1/4 x 2 1/4 TLR Reflex camera in 1977 of our  family farm at New Hope.

We merged the b&w shots into a single image, tinted them and added built “bleeds” for the wrap-around.

This is the final file for the printer with 1″ of “built” image added all around for the wrap.

Sesquicentennial Photo Album

Photo Album featuring photos of Alleghany Courthouse, before 1933 fire and Christmas 2008.

Designed by Imaging Specialists and manufactured by NAPCO in Sparta, NC.

Bill Irwin’s Post Card Puzzle

This puzzle features two “Airplane Views” of Sparta with detail views of Main Street. They feature the old Courthouse, so we can date them pre-1933.  The originals were post cards owned by Bill Irwin.

Janice Alexander, Mountain Endeavors, Puzzle

Imaging Specialists designed and completed all the prepress work on these items except for this Alleghany Star puzzle which was designed by Janice Alexander of Mountain Endeavors in Glade Valley, NC.
